Building a Clean Energy Future off the Virginia & North Carolina Coasts

Avangrid’s Kitty Hawk Wind Project is a groundbreaking climate solution and economic engine that will directly advance the transition to a clean energy future— while delivering significant economic benefits to strengthen communities.

Clean Energy

Avangrid projects Kitty Hawk Wind will deliver approximately 3,500 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity generation, enough to power roughly 1 million homes and businesses.

The renewable energy produced by Kitty Hawk Wind will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.5 million tons, which is comparable to removing approximately 500,000 cars from the road every year.

Economic Catalyst

Kitty Hawk Wind will power a clean energy economy by generating $2 billion in economic impact over the next decade. This includes an additional $100 million in state and local tax revenue during the first 10 years of the project.

During construction, the project will create an average of 800 jobs annually in the region, with upwards of 900 annual jobs over the project’s lifespan.

New Mid-Atlantic Industry

Kitty Hawk Wind will leverage the region’s robust maritime infrastructure, driving transformational investment and supply chain opportunities to build a hub for offshore wind in the mid-Atlantic.

The Hampton Roads metro area has the largest percentage of maritime workers in the US. Kitty Hawk Wind will propel a new domestic industry forward, creating opportunities for this skilled maritime workforce within the offshore wind supply chain.

Responsible Siting

The Kitty Hawk Wind lease area is more than 36 miles off the coast of Virginia and 27 miles off the NC Outer Banks in an area delineated by the federal government following a four-year evaluation process including multiple federal and state agencies, public comment, and a complete Environmental Assessment.

Avangrid has been studying the wind development area in more detail since securing the lease area through a competitive auction conducted by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in 2017. Agencies are required to seek input from stakeholders including the public throughout the permitting process.
